Responses to Locations in Transition_MAKING SPACE

ANNETTE FERNANDO

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AUGUST 2022

Taking inspiration from the history of streets and areas in London that hold significance to me and pairing that with my own memories or memories of locals, my process is to riffle through archival and cinematic images of the past and re-appropriate them to create new narratives framed within today’s context.

See you soon

About Making Space
Spurred on by the measured success of founding The Tommy Flowers Community Pub, we have now been given this next door unit to house our growing arts programme until September 2022, when this row of shops built in the 1950s are due for demolition. We are part of The Whitechapel Gallery’s First Thursdays monthly late openings and are open to applications and invitations for reciprocal collaborative engagement with the public, from artists and organisations internationally.

This former post office closed many years ago and has been largely unused since, so with 20 local building trades students from New City College we are refurbishing it into a modular project space, inviting young artists and emerging socially-engaged groups to grow their practice.  We offer a regular series of free learning workshops including mask casting/making, glassblowing and ceramics,  launching our programme in summer 2021 and are crowdfunding to be able to deliver this community-focused creative Outreach. Our international ambition has so far involved artists originating from Africa, Asia, the Americas and across Europe.
