Nauticá : Sugar Towers / Sweet Labour
A free exhibition for Photomonth during Black History Month that blends rarely-seen images from the Getty Images Hulton Archive of mid-19th century Poplar industry and culture, with contemporary portraits by Adam French, augmented by Danny Amos Flynn’s Coolitude! screenprints of indentured Indian plantation workers in Mauritius forced to pay highly for their own ID photographs, exhibited alongside ceramic sugar bowls by Angela Strange using torn designs, echoing fractured lives.
This event is part of Tower Hamlets Black History Month 2026 and reflects this year’s theme: Honouring Our Communities.
With special thanks to the Black History Month team at London Borough of Tower Hamlets for their support and King’s Foundation students Dashiel Bonti and Evie Brookes.
