Fitzrovia Noir Community Interest Company has a rich history of fostering inclusive public engagement, by transforming under-utilised urban spaces into vibrant hubs of creativity and creative learning – a vision that aligns with London Festival of Architecture’s 2024 theme of ‘Reimagine’. Our team’s experience working with the LFA alongside local authorities and community groups, uniquely equipped us to assist VAPAA Collective in managing the intricacies of designing and executing a site-specific project within a two-week timeframe, while concurrently conducting workshops and events.
Collaborating with the Glenkerry Group, a longstanding co-operative in the last Erno Goldfinger tower block built in the post-war redevelopment of Poplar, we designed a symposium on Acts of Care in Architecture at Somerset House that was selected as an LFA Curators Choice event. Partnering with the Finnish Institute UK & Ireland we delivered presentations alongside VAPAA Collective and a Q&A with Samir Pandya, architect and Associate Head of the School of Architecture and Cities at University of Westminster.
At Fitzrovia Noir CIC, we take great pride in our collaborative approach with communities, ensuring that each project we embark on is not merely an artistic endeavour but also a socially conscious initiative, such as our marking of the emotional ties that staff and patients had to The Middlesex Hospital in Fitzrovia, as it was being demolished in 2008, our very first public engagement project.
Additionally, in response to rising rents driving independent practitioners from Fitzrovia, we showcased our work in local businesses instead of galleries, creating art trails in the neighbourhood complete with free printed guided tours with authors who have written extensively about the area.
Our collaborative approach is exemplified by our members, from Garry Hunter, who excels in bringing together diverse bodies, creative practitioners and community groups to explore common aims of social justice and free learning for all, to Suzanne Harb, whose expertise in programme management and experience working within London based practices including Arup and Wilkinson Eyre, brings together community engagement aspirations and an understanding of architectural praxis.
We are eager to bring our collective knowledge, passion for inclusive creative making, and dedication to support the creation of an impactful, site-specific and site-responsive work that reflects our shared values of community, participation, and care in the built environment.
